HOW WE SCORE FILMS – Horror Haven Judging Process
Our Judging Philosophy
Every submission is evaluated by a panel of horror-focused judges who prioritize creativity, atmosphere, voice, and emotional impact over budget or industry status.
We watch everything start to finish with an open mind.
Scores help guide selections, but discussions among our judges determine the final lineup.
SCORING CRITERIA
Each film is graded 1 to 10 in the following categories:
1. Originality / Creativity
How unique, bold, and imaginative the project is.
Does it bring something new to horror or execute a familiar idea in a fresh way?
2. Direction
The filmmaker’s vision, tone control, and ability to create effective scenes.
Does the director guide the film with confidence and purpose?
3. Writing
Strength of story, characters, structure, dialogue, and thematic cohesion.
Does it deliver a compelling narrative or concept?
4. Cinematography
Shot composition, lighting, camera movement, and visual storytelling.
Is the imagery engaging and supportive of the tone?
5. Performances
Quality and believability of the actors.
Do the performances elevate the film or weaken the immersion?
6. Production Value
Practical effects, design, locations, costuming, and overall craftsmanship.
We judge effort and effectiveness, not budget.
7. Pacing
Flow, rhythm, and how well tension is built and maintained.
Does the film feel tight and intentional?
8. Structure
Narrative clarity, editing, consistency, and progression.
Does the film feel well-constructed from start to finish?
9. Sound / Music
Clarity, mixing, original score, sound design, and atmosphere.
Does sound enhance the experience or distract from it?
AVERAGE SCORE
All categories are averaged to determine the project's overall rating.
Scores help place projects, but judges also discuss standout elements that numbers alone cannot capture.
